The day has finally arrived! You’ve picked your departure city, whether it’s Pula, Šibenik, Split, or Dubrovnik. You’ve booked a boat along with a skipper who will guide you around the Adriatic Sea and Croatia’s islands. Before setting sail, it’s a good idea to keep these five safety tips in mind for first-time sailors. Let’s start!

1. Follow the Skipper’s Instructions.

Your skipper is a professional in charge of your safety and that of the boat. They handle navigation, monitor weather conditions, and provide a safety briefing before departure. This briefing will cover how to move around safely, what’s allowed and not allowed, and a general plan for the week. Pay close attention to these instructions.

2. Be Mindful of Your Surroundings.

A boat isn’t as steady as solid ground, especially while sailing. Always be cautious when moving around, hold on to something, and watch for any wet or slippery areas to avoid injuries.

3. Watch Where You Step.

Stay alert while moving around the deck, as open hatches or ropes can be tripping hazards. If the boat is smaller and doesn’t have a dedicated crew, you might be asked to assist the skipper with ropes during docking. Just be cautious where you place your fingers to avoid accidents.

4. Don’t Push Off with Your Hands or Feet.

If the boat is approaching another vessel or the dock, never try to push off with your hands or feet. This can be risky, so leave it to the skipper. Boats are very large and heavy by puting your hands in risky situations you can only put yourself in danger and you risk huritng yourself.

5. Wait for the Skipper’s Signal Before Swimming.

When the boat is anchored, don’t jump into the water until the skipper confirms it’s safe. Once they’re sure the boat is anchored properly and the engine is off, you’re good to go. Avoid jumping while the boat is moving or if the engine is running.

Lastly, remember a few more things: pack sunscreen to prevent sunburn, limit sun exposure to avoid heatstroke, and bring water shoes to protect your feet from rocks or sea urchins. Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water is also key.

These are just some of our top tips, and we hope they’re helpful! If you have questions on board, don’t hesitate to ask your skipper for clarification. Enjoy your holiday in Croatia, and we hope these tips make it even better. Thank you, and happy sailing!
